What exactly is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome as the name suggests is a gynaecological disorder in which multiple fluid-filled cysts are formed in the ovaries. They can be present in both the ovaries or any one of them. These cysts prevent the follicles to mature and release ovum (egg) which further causes imbalance in release of female sex hormones which disturbs the menstrual cycle and may cause infertility (inability to conceive).

What causes PCOS?
The exact cause of PCOS is not known yet. But following factors can be attributed to it:
Genetic causes- PCOS can be genetic, i.e. certain abnormalities present in the genes lead to excess secretion of male sex hormones (androgens) which causes PCOS.
Insulin resistance- Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas to use up blood sugar and produce energy. But in insulin resistance cells in the body become resistant to insulin which increases blood sugar level and more insulin is secreted. More insulin causes increased production of male sex hormones (androgens) causing PCOS.
Low-grade inflammation- Diseases such as Tuberculosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, etc. produce chronic inflammation in the body. This in turn causes excess secretion of androgens causing PCOS.
